JUNE 2016 PROPOSED TRAVEL ITINERARY

 

DAY 01 (SAT, JUN 18): USA/BEIJING

  • Fly from the US to Beijing (you will lose one day en route, which will be regained upon your return).

Overnight: In Flight

 

DAY 02 (SUN, JUN 19): ARRIVE BEIJING

  • After disembarking from your flight, you will be met by representatives from Elite Meet and Greet and escorted through immigration and customs. Local guides will escort you to the hotel, where you will have some free time to rest.

Overnight: The Four Seasons Hotel, Beijing

 

DAY 03 (MON, JUN 20): BEIJING

  • Beijing city orientation with architectural historian and contemporary art scholar Mia Yu. The morning tour will focus on the architectural heritage of Beijing and include both iconic historic and contemporary buildings.
  • Enjoy lunch at the Bai Jia Da Yuan, a restaurant renown for its imperial cuisine, once served to ruling families of the Qing Dynasty.
  • Afternoon visit to the Summer Palace, the imperial garden and summer retreat of the Qing imperial family.
  • Dinner will be held in a private room of the Duck de Chine, Beijing's finest roast duck restaurant.

DAY 04 (TUES, JUN 21): BEIJING / DUNHUANG

  • Morning flight from Beijing to Dunhuang.
  • Afternoon visit to the Dunhuang Visitor’s Center, where we will learn about the conservation efforts at the Dunhuang Academy.
  • Free time to explore the Singing Sand Dunes, Crescent Moon Lake, and Shazhou Night Market in the evening.

DAY 05 (WED, JUN 22): DUNHUANG

  • Full-day visit to the Mogao caves. A private guide from the Dunhuang Academy will lead our small group into the Mogao Caves. They will provide access to about a dozen caves, including Cave 96, the iconic nine-story pagoda with the colossal 35.5 tall Buddha and Cave 17, the famed Library Cave containing manuscripts from the ancient world, sealed in the 11th century.
  • Our private guide will also bring us to some of the more restricted caves, such as:
    • Cave 285: A sumptuous, well-preserved cave sponsored by members of the Wei Dynasty imperial house. Finished in 539, it features murals of Hindu and Chinese myths and portraits of monks in meditation in brilliant color.
    • Cave 158: This cave features a stunning relief of a 50-foot-long reclining Buddha in nirvana.

DAY 06 (THURS, JUN 23): DUNHUANG

  • Day trip to the Yulin grottoes, a site 100 km east of Dunhuang. The 40 plus caves of the Yulin Grottoes face each other across a narrow canyon. Our private guide will lead us through this stunning collection of caves, which feature work from a 1500-year period from the Northern Wei to Qing Dynasty. The frescos here are better preserved and many show a distinctive Tibetan influence.
  • Time permitting, afternoon visit to the exhibition center to see Tibetan Bronzes salvaged from the Cultural Revolution.

DAY 07 (FRI, JUN 24): DUNHUANG / URUMQI

  • Morning visit to the conservation and reproduction laboratories at the Academy, where we will gain insight into the painstaking cave replication process. We will also visit the sand control center, where researchers are studying methods to protect the fragile caves from the elements.
  • Afternoon flight from Dunhuang to Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region.

Overnight: The Grand Mercure Hotel, Urumqi

 

DAY 08 (SAT, JUN 25): URUMQI / TURFAN / URUMQI / KASHGAR

  • Morning expedition to the ancient lost cities of Gaochang and Jiaohe, once mighty trading centers along the caravan routes to Central Asia.
  • Afternoon visit to the Bezelik Buddhist Grottoes, a cave complex that features Uighur Buddhist art from the 6th to 14th centuries.
  • Evening flight from Urumqi to Kashgar, the western-most city of China.

Overnight: The Jinjiang Hotel, Kashgar

 

DAY 09 (SUN, JUN 26): KASHGAR

  • Early morning visit to the Sunday Bazaar of Kashgar, one of the largest markets in Asia. From livestock to carpets to spices, the Sunday Bazaar retains echoes of its Silk Road past. Not to be missed.
  • Afternoon guided walking tour of Kashgar's old city.
  • This evening, enjoy a traditional roast lamb dinner at the Chini Bagh, the former home of British Consul to Kashgar, George Macartney.

Day 10 (MON, JUN 27): KASHGAR

  • Day trip along the Karakorum Highway, the “Roof of the World,” that will take you from the oasis through the desert and then up and into the Karakorum Mountains, which separate China from the Indian subcontinent.
  • Enjoy lunch at Lake Karakuli, a beautiful glacial lake set between two of the highest peaks on the China side of the mountains: Mount Mutzgata and Mount Kongur, both rising more than 24,000 feet.

Overnight: The Jinjiang Hotel, Kashgar

 

Day 11 (TUES, JUN 28): KASHGAR / URUMQI / BEIJING

  • Morning flight from Kashgar back to Urumqi.
  • Afternoon flight from Urumqi back to Beijing.

Overnight: The Beijing Airport Hilton Hotel, Beijing

 

DAY 12 (WED, JUN 29): DEPART BEIJING

Individual departures from the hotel to the Capital Airport, Beijing, where you will board your flight home.

DEPOSIT INFORMATION

Payments can be made through a check to the Dunhuang Foundation or via our online payment system.

  • First deposit of US $1,375.00/person due on March 15, 2016
  • Second deposit of US $1,375.00/person due on April 15, 2016
  • Remaining balance due on May 15, 2016

If cancellations are made before May, you will receive a full refund of the deposit. If cancellations are made during the month of May, half the deposit amount will be refunded. No refunds will be made after May.
